QUESTION: Any suggestions for a nice family friendly restaurant for lunch on the way down to Key West? ? We are driving down from Fort Lauderdale and something in the Upper Keys would be just fine. ANSWER: We stop at Harriette's every time we are heading down the Keys. The breakfast or lunch is delicious and we always get a few home-cooked muffins to enjoy later. The muffins are huge and come in an assorted mix of flavors. This is a classic Key West style restaurant and is easy to find just after Mile Marker 96.
The restaurant opens at 6am and the only people in there early are the fishing boat captains. It is neat to see them chow before they head out for a long day on the water. You will see the crab traps all over, lots of the guys handle the traps. I like to get the Huevos Rancheros (Scramble eggs with sea breeze sauce, ranchero cheese).
The upper keys are loaded with Prime Time restaurants and bars, as we found out while staying at the Bayside Inn at mile marker 99. Here our the Best Restaurants in Key Largo, based upon our two week vacation and taste testing. Harriette's - Cheng Garden - Rib Daddy - Marlin Restaurant - Mrs Macs Kitchen - JJ's Sports Bar - Denny's Latin Cafe - and the Buzzard's Roost by the Garden Cove Marina.
What a nice and healthy menu including the Egg White Omelet. Yes, watching the cholesterol like everyone else over forty years old. The menu recipe uses four egg whites with your choice of veggies to load it up huge. I like spinach, green pepper, onions, hot pepper flakes, and scallions. The menu is huge with or without meat.
